Biophysics; Models for distribution of induced currents in the brain using multi-electrode stimulation.
The Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering (IBEB) is a research unit located in the Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon (FCUL). The research carried out at IBEB involves mainly signal and image processing, image reconstruction and modelling for biomedical applications. Currently, 10 researchers (PhDs) and over 15 PhD students carry out their research work at IBEB, in the following areas: transcranial neural stimulation, brain electrophysiology, cardiac electrophysiology, MRI and fMRI image processing, molecular imaging and image reconstruction. IBEB is legally represented by the Foundation of the Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon (FFCUL).
IBEB will be responsible for developing and implementing physical models comprising a head and an extracranial multi-electrode system for calculating the current distribution in the brain, for both DC and low frequency AC currents. Data from these models can be used by Partner 6 to stimulate their neuronal system model. IBEB will also interact with the other partners to define electrode configurations optimised for specific studies.
